Cyprus
[ send me this paper ]
15 pages in length. Cyprus gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1960 accompanied by constitutional guarantees supported by the Greek Cypriot majority to the Turkish Cypriot minority. An attempted Greek-endorsed seizure in 1974 met Turkish opposition, a military move that culminated in Turkey's control of nearly forty percent of the island located in the Mediterranean Sea; a short nine years later found it renamed to Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Nearly two decades later, United Nations talks continued as a means by which to definitively determine Cyprus' status and prepare the ground for meaningful negotiations leading to a comprehensive settlement. [ send me this paper ]
8 pages in length. The extent to which democratization and development in the Middle East is a precarious endeavor is both grand and far-reaching. While the ultimate outcome will serve to be beneficial and worth the tremendous effort, the political, economic and cultural obstacles facing this objective will prove challenging at best. That various entities seek to establish their respective approach to political development represents but one obstacle; the Iraqi people themselves reflect yet another. The United States is not daunted by these challenges, however, and looks to accomplish its goal of democratization both fully and without compromise. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
